Satellite-derived Water Quality Status for the Water Framework Directive (WFD) of the European Union

French Metropolitan water bodies demonstrator

Water quality status for the Water Framework Directive (WFD : DCE and DCSMM) of the European Union are shown. Satellite imagery is used here to classify the coastal waters for the eutrophication risk criterion of the WFD. This classification is made according to the percentile-90 (P90) of chlorophyll-a calculated during the productive season, from March to October.

WFD/DCE quality status

Water quality status is estimated according to P90 of chlorophyll-a calculated with MERIS Full resolution (ESA) data and in-situ measurements (REPHY/IFREMER) during the productive period (from March to October). The P90 estimated on 6 years (2006-2011) is shown for the different sub-regions of the French WFD/DCE.

MSFD/DCSMM quality status

Water quality status is estimated according to P90 of chlorophyll-a calculated with MERIS Full resolution (ESA) data. Quarterly annual P90 are shown for the Mediterranean Sea together with the Rhône discharge.
